New youth teams scrum down

There’s an air of optimism around Welshpool Rugby Club this season which has bounced back from one of the most challenging years in its history to show there is plenty of hope for the game's future in the town.

After a summer of soul searching, the club has enjoyed a decent season in Division Three (north) but it is the youth development programme that has caught the eye.

The club started the season with a Junior Section consisting of Under 8s to Under 11s teams, but it is now eying the high school age group with teams at Under 14 and Under 16 level.

The U16 lads have already played their first game and are training regularly while the U14 section should be up and running by the end of the season to be run in the short-term by Under 16 coach Pete Davies. A search has begun to find a permanent coach before next season.

“Training for boys in Years 8 and 9 will be beginning at the club this coming Wednesday (February 22) at 6pm,” said Barry Williams, Junior Academy Director. “If you are interested, then please feel free to come down and take a look. We have also set up a group at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/276493012419724/.”
